Nine Iranian prominent lawyers released a statement on Wednesday, in which they have urged the Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei to step down.

The lawyers described Khamenei’s leadership “illegitimate” and the constitution of Islamic Republic “unlawful.” The statement called for a referendum and “to return Iran to its people.”

Based in Norway, Mohammad Mostafaei one of the signatories of the statement, asked for the release of a number of Iran-based activists who have been calling for the resignation of Khamenei in June and August.

“We want the dismissal of the occupiers and tyrants in our country,” Mostafaei said.

Among 14 civic activists who had asked for the Iranian leader to end his power, at least 7 have been detained by Iranian security forces.

The recent statement has been signed by Mehrangiz Kar, Mehdi Houshmand Rahimi, Hossein Ahmadi Niaz, Mohammad Mostafaie, Masood Akhtarani Tehrani, Ehsan Hosseinzadeh, Soheila Rahimi Jokandan, and Mojtaba Hosseini.

Iranian people on social media have recently started a campaign in support of these statements and in favor of Khamenei’s resignation.
