Referring to the protests as a “full-scale riot”, Iranian prosecutor Mohammad Jafar Montazeri said innocent people might be detained as well, justifying the mass arrests of at least 7000 Iranians.

Montazeri, who referred to protesters as “rioters” said Iranian security forces could have mistakenly arrested some “innocent” people to calm the situation.

He did not however mention what might have happened to those innocent people after investigations. Amnesty international has so far confirmed the death of 208 people and announced that at least 7000 were arrested.

Opposition sources have estimated the death toll and the number of people in detention to be much higher than expected.

Top American officials claimed that Iran killed more than 1000 people in November protests, which started over fuel price hikes.

Iran has brutally suppressed protesters including those who were underage. The regime has declined to release official reports on the number of victims.
