Leaked documents from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) obtained by Radio Farda warn of widespread social unrest due to deteriorating living conditions in Iran.
Society is in a “state of explosion,” the document said.
The seven-page document was leaked by Edalat-e Ali, a hacktivist group that previously published videos of mistreatment and torture of inmates in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison.
The document details a task force meeting headed by Hossien Nejat, deputy commander of Sarallah, the IRGC base responsible for Tehran’s security. Members of the IRGC and its paramilitary Basij force, intelligence officers, and a representative from the Tehran prosecutor’s office were also in attendance.
In the meeting, an IRGC official referred to as Mohammadi said that, based on their survey of public discontent, the country is at risk of boiling over.
“Society is in a state of explosion,” Mohammadi said. “Social discontent has risen by 300 percent in the past year.”
Another official named Colonel Kaviani, who is believed to be from Iran’s interior intelligence agency, said that protests have increased by 50 percent and the number of protesters involved has doubled.
Iran is in a severe financial crisis. Officials blame US sanctions, but critics say government mismanagement and widespread corruption are the main factors causing the crisis.
In the past year, there have been protests over multiple issues including water shortages, low salaries and delayed payments, and stock market losses. On Tuesday, Iranian teachers continued their protest over low salaries and inflation, gathering in front of the parliament and provincial education ministry offices.
