The Iranian president said on Wednesday his country will definitely take revenge from those responsible for the assassination of top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020.

“Our nation reserves the right to avenge the killing of their loved one (Soleimani), and won’t calm down until they do so,” Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday.

He claimed that Donald Trump and the US secretary of state are among the key elements behind the assassination.

“The assassination of General Soleimani was revenge on the Islamic Republic of Iran, on the independence of regional countries and on the great nations which stood up to, and thwarted the US and Zionist plots,” he said, using the word “Zionist” to refer to the country’s old foe Israel.

The tensions between Tehran and Washington have especially raised earlier this year after pro-Iranian forces killed an American contractor in Kirkuk and attacked the US embassy in Baghdad. Two days later, the US killed Iranian top general Qassem Suleimani, who was a very close figure to Khamenei, in a strike on his car in Baghdad international airport.
