Tehran will not accept US demands to reverse a quickening of its nuclear programme before Washington lifts sanctions, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday.

Iran has been constantly violating the terms of the agreement to increase nuclear enrichment levels and its stockpile of uranium.

Speaking at a news conference in Istanbul, Zarif said the demand “is not practical and will not happen”.

The 2015 agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, provided Tehran with sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activity.

Tension between the US and Iran have hiked since 2018 after Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers and reimposed crippling sanctions on Tehran.
