A group of Iranian lawmakers on Tuesday called on parliament to discuss a motion for the country to quit a treaty governing global nuclear arms control, Reuters reported.

The move is apparently taken to pressure European powers to save Iran’s own 2015 nuclear deal.

According to Iran’s ICANA news site, a limited number of Iranian parliament members signed a request to the parliament in order to allow the lawmakers running a debate about this issue.

“To become a law, the proposal would have to be passed by lawmakers in two readings and then ratified by the Guardian Council, a body that is in charge of ensuring bills do not contradict religious laws or Iran’s constitution,” the report explained.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has however the final saying about all the decisions in the country.
