Islamic republic of Iran spent 1 billion USD in an isolated port of Shahid Beheshti in less-developed province of Sistan and Baluchestan, hoping to reduce the impacts of US Sanctions, Sputniknews reported on Wednesday.

The port, which is close to Pakistan border, remain the only port that is enjoying exemptions from the international sanctions re-implied by US since last year.

“The port is set to become a part of a trade route named the North-South Corridor that would connect Central Asia and the Indian Ocean,” the report reads.

The mass project is however yet to be finished as officials are working to develop the rail and road network and the airport.

Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, where the isolated port is located, considered one of the poorest region in the country. The Baluch inhabitants are highly unsatisfied with the government’s discriminated policies in that region.
