Iran has executed a man on Thursday morning by hanging after he was convicted for “moharebeh” (enmity against God) by a Revolutionary Court, according to Iranian state media.
Mohsen Shekari participated in a popular uprising that has rocked the country since the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September this year.
Shekari’s death signals an imminent government clampdown on the demonstrations.
He was reportedly accused by the Iranian authorities of being a “rioter” and of injuring a member of a paramilitary force.
The events supposedly transpired whilst he was blocking Tehran’s Sattar Khan Street on 25 September. According to the accusations, Shekari then attacked a member of the Basij Resistance Force with a machete. The Basij Resistance Force is a paramilitary unit that has been deployed to crackdown on protesters.
