Dozens of angry Shiite militias backed by Iran on Tuesday smashed the main door of American embassy compound in Baghdad, setting the reception area on fire local media reported.

The militants have reportedly used tear gas and gunfire while attacking the American compound. AP reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside and counted at least three US soldiers on the roof of the main building inside the embassy.

Earlier this week pro-Iran militias killed an American contractor in a rocket attack in Kirkuk. US has conducted “defensive strikes” in response, killing at least 25 militants and wounding dozens more.

In one the first reactions, Marco rubio, US Senator for Florida tweeted: Iran is directly responsible for orchestrating the storming of the US Embassy in Iraq & must be held accountable for it & the safety of every American serving there.

Iran’s best ally in Iraq, Hashd al-Shaabi vowed “revenge” against US forces on Monday.
