Iran started voting on July 5 in a presidential runoff between Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili, with polling stations opening at 08:00 local time.

A snap election on 28 June with less than 40% of eligible voters’ participation failed to produce a clear winner, with Pezeshkian securing 10.41mn votes and Jalili 9.47mn, both falling short of the required 50% threshold.

There were about 61 million eligible voters. The voter turnout was announced to be around 40% in the first round. Reports indicated that the actual number was lower.

The snap elections follow the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, choosing from a tightly controlled group of four candidates loyal to the supreme leader at a time of growing public frustration.
