Suspicious Death of Abbas Deljouei Days After Release from Detention

According to received information, Abbas Deljouei, a 21-year-old veterinary student who entered in fall 2022 at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, died of an apparent heart attack in his sleep just a few days after being released from more than one month of arbitrary detention.

Reports indicate that he had been arrested on January 8, 2026, and remained in custody until early February.

The government of the Iran has a long record of using physical and psychological torture, which can lead to severe health complications such as heart problems, strokes, or even suicide — cases that are often officially attributed to “sudden cardiac arrest” or “natural causes.”

In a detailed report published on Sunday, January 25, Time magazine, citing two senior officials from Iran’s Ministry of Health, stated that during the two days of January 8–9, when the government’s violent crackdown reached its peak, “up to 30,000 people” may have been killed in streets across various cities.

Meanwhile, the human rights news agency HRANA announced in its latest aggregated data, published Monday, February 16, that the total number of confirmed deaths had reached 7,015.

Of these, 6,508 were recorded as protesters, 226 were individuals under the age of 18, 214 were military or government personnel, and 67 were categorized as “non-civilian, non-protester” fatalities.
