Iranian-backed militias on Monday vowed “revenge” after US attacked the group’s military’s base in Iraq and killed at least 25 militias, CBS news reported.

The move came after pro-Iranian militias killed an American contractor last week in a rocket attack in Kirkuk, Iraq.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended the retaliation strikes and said it send the message that US won’t tolerate anti-American actions by Iran.

Senior commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs), Abu Mahdi Al Muhandis, in a statement of Monday threatened to attack Americans in the region.

“We will hold America accountable and will not stay silent on what has happened. The administration in Washington cannot possibly think that they control Iraq,” Muhandis said.

Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Unit is known as Iran’s best ally and Tehran is providing military and financial supports to the group.

Pompeo said earlier that Washington might take “additional actions” if necessary after the “defensive strikes”.

Iran has denied involvement in the attack against Americans in Iraq, but slammed US for attacking its proxy in Iraq.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi on Monday called US attacks “an act of terror.”
