An official of Iran’s Ministry of Health Maryam Abbasinejad, who is leading Suicide Prevention Program, said nearly 100,000 Iranians have tried to commit suicide last year.

“The rate of suicide attempts is higher in the predominantly Kurdish region of Western Iranian provinces of Ilam, Kermanshah, Kurdistan, and West Azerbaijan,” The official Iranian News Agency IRNA quoted Abbasinejad on Thursday.

“From 2015 to 2018, the rate of attempted suicide had been increased from 94 in every 100.000 people to 125,” she said.

Abbasinejad has also mentioned that nearly 75 percent of those who had tried to commit suicide are between the ages of 15-35; half of them were married.

“Approximately 82 percent had tried to commit suicide by drug overdose.” She added.

Iran has been facing major political, economic, and social crisis in the past few years.
