Iran has sentenced three prominent defense attorneys for their human right activities, Center for Human Rights in Iran said in a statement on Wednesday.

In less than a year, Amirsalar Davoudi, Nasrin Sotoudeh, and Mohamad Najafi, who are among the most well-known Iranian lawyers, have been sentenced to long jail terms despite local and international condemnations.

“The sentencing of three defense attorneys including Davoudi to long prison terms in less than a year represent a spike in the trend of lawyers being jailed for defending and advocating human rights in Iran,” read the statement.

The Executive Director of Center for Human Rights in Iran Hadi Ghaemi criticized the Iranian judiciary system and condemned the arrest of lawyers who have been doing their jobs.

“Iran is putting lawyers behind bars for doing their jobs and depriving those targeted by the state of consul of choice in an attempt to further suppress dissent,” Ghaemi said.
