A Syrian delegation, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Faisal Mekdad, landed in Iran on Sunday to hold talks with Iranian top officials.

According to a report by The Syrian Observers, the visit will last for two days, and the parties will discuss strengthening the strategic relations between the two countries.

Last week, Syria also received an Iranian economic delegation headed by Seyyed Reza Fatemi Amin, Iranian Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade, where he met with senior Syrian officials.

These meetings come as Russia and Iran compete over financial and economic influence in Syria.

The two countries have competed for influence in Syria in the past by claiming that they want to restore historical monuments in the country.

“Both sides are working to portray themselves as protectors of Syria’s heritage, ready to restore archaeological sites,” The Syrian Observer said in a report published in May.
