Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has dismissed the central bank governor, Abdolnaser Hemmati, who is running in a June 18 presidential election.

In a Saturday night discussion on the Clubhouse social media app, Hemmati said Rouhani had told him that he would have to stand down at the bank if he stands for president, "because it affects monetary and exchange rate policies".

"I told him that I had no problem with his decision," he added.

Hemmati, a moderate, was appointed as central bank governor in 2018. He is one of seven candidates for president, with the others mostly loyal hardliners.

Last week, the Guardian Council barred leading reformists and some conservatives from standing.
