Iran on Tuesday launched a coronavirus vaccination campaign among healthcare professionals with Russian Sputnik V vaccines, recently delivered in a very limited amount.

Iran is facing the worst outbreak of the pandemic in the Middle East with its official death toll nearing 59,000.

Parsa Namaki, son of Health Minister Saeed Namaki, received his first dose.

“We have to vaccinate vulnerable groups,” the Minister said.

He explained that the vaccination would be carried out in more than 600 medical centers across the country.

In the coming weeks, Iran plans to extend the vaccination to elderly people and those suffering from chronic diseases, the minister added.
