Iran has downplayed the US special operation announced on Sunday October 27, which resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the event as “impressive achievement.”
Baghdadi was killed in a US military raid in a village in the Syrian city of Idlib, which has border with Turkey.
During a press conference, US President Donald Trump announced that the ISIS chief died after running into a tunnel where he detonated his explosive vest, killing himself and three of his children.
During the Sunday announcement, Trump thanked Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Russia and the Syrian Kurds for their cooperation.
Russian government however denied any involvement with its defence ministry saying that “it had no reliable information on the US operation.”
Iran went further as its information minister, Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi said in a tweet that the killing of Baghdadi “is not a big deal. You just killed your creature.”
Iran has been accusing US in the past of creating ISIS without further elaboration or providing evidences.
Both Turkey, Iraq and Israel regarded the event as significant and turning point in fighting the group.
The Syrian Kurds have also called the death of ISIS leader as a “historic” event.
