US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Monday said his country will ramp up economic pressures on Tehran over its nuclear program, Reuters has reported.
The remark came as Mnuchin started his Middle East visit to American allies Israel and Saudi Arabia. He was reportedly talking to reporters in Jerusalem.
“We have executed on a maximum pressure campaign for sanctions. They have worked, they are working, they are cutting off the money,” Mnuchin was quoted by Reuters.
In May 2018, US president Donald Trump withdrew from Iran’s nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Washington has re-imposed sanctions, hoping to change Tehran’s political behavior. Tensions have been rising between the two countries since then.
