At least six schools in Iranian Kurdistan had been targeted by poison gas on Sunday resulting in anti-regime protests in the city of Saqqez.

According to the reports Kurdish students in at least six girls’ schools in Saqqez, including Meraj, Taleghani, and Samiya had been poisoned yesterday. At least 47 students were taken to the hospital as a result, with 20 students reported to be in critical condition.

Families of students gathered in front of the schools protesting against the lack of security in schools and suspicious chemical attacks.

According to Hengaw human rights organization, which monitors the attacks, security forces opened fire against the protesters.

Thousands of Iranian students, mostly schoolgirls, were affected in the past months by a wave of poison attacks, with symptoms including nausea, headaches, coughing, breathing difficulties, and heart palpitations.

Schoolgirls have been on the forefront of protests that have rocked the country following the death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini in morality police custody in September after the young Kurdish-Iranian woman was arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly.
