Iran on Saturday said it is recalling its ambassador in Yemen as he has been infected by coronavirus.

According to the Foreign Ministry’s statement on its website, that Ambassador Hassan Irloo needed urgent medical care after being infected for several days and was en route to Iran.

Iran’s official announcement comes after the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Irloo was being removed over strains with the Houthi rebels.

Houthis are backed by Iran. The militias hold Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.

The report quotes unidentified officials from the Mideast and Western officials, saying that Irloo showed no signs of having Covid-19.

Iran has given the Houthis military and political support, according to Arab countries, the West and United Nations experts. Tehran has long denied the allegations, despite evidence of its active involvement.
