Iranian civil and political activists released a statement on Monday urging the government to put an end to the heavy crackdown in Sistan and Baluchestan's Saravan.

The activist also asked the state to respond to the family of those who were killed by security forces.

The statement also holds the government responsible for the high rate of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy in the Southern province.

Amnesty International published a statement on Tuesday, accusing Iran’s Revolutionary Guards of unlawfully using lethal force against unarmed fuel porters near Saravan and violating international law.

The watchdog also called for urgent, independent criminal investigations into the murders.

Protests broke out in Saravan after 37 fuel porters known as Soukhtbars were shot dead by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at the country’s Baluchestan province near the border of Pakistan on Monday, February 22.
