As Washington’s financial pressure against Tehran reached its peak on Monday with new round of sanctions, US envoy to Syria promised that US will further push Iran in order to stop their activities in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, Washington post reported on Wednesday.
Ambassador James Jeffery told a group of journalists via a telephone conference that Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal helped Tehran to “accelerate its activities.”
US president Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 Iran Nuclear deal in May, called the deal “worst ever” agreement, which was signed during Barak Obama’s administration.
“Iranians are part of the problem not part of the solution.” Jeffery told the journalists. According to the ambassador, the White House is now focusing on financial pressure against Iran and confronting Iran’s military activities in neighboring countries, particularly in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. He did not further elaborate on this issue.
The ambassador has also declared that US is honoring the Russian tolerance regarding Israeli strikes against Iranians in Syria.
“In the past, Russia has been permissive in consultations with the Israelis about Israeli strikes against Iranian targets inside Syria. We certainly hope that that permissive approach will continue,” Washington quoted Jeffery as saying.
Iran has been repeatedly accused by international organizations and western countries of arming pro-Shiite military groups in the Middle East, and offering financial support to the militant groups.
Iranian military forces directly participate in Syrian war despite the request of Iranian withdrawal by US and Israel.
