Following the recent large-scale wildfires in the Suren mountains of Marivan, in Sanandaj province of Iranian Kurdistan, environmental activists discovered barrels filled with incendiary substances that were extensively packed with explosives and interconnected wires. According to local sources, these materials are believed to have been the main cause behind the rapid spread of the fires.

According to reports received by Avatoday, environmental activists and local volunteer forces, who took part in extinguishing the flames near the villages of Kani Kohe and Piranekon, came across these suspicious materials after putting out the fire. Investigations indicate that the devices were designed in such a way that, once connected to other materials, they could trigger explosions and massive fires.

Photos and videos released also show that the materials were manufactured for military use and could serve as weapons of war or incendiary tools. Experts state that these substances are capable of generating extremely high heat and can cause fires to spread rapidly across forested areas.

The wildfire, which broke out on Wednesday, September 10, engulfed large parts of Marivan’s mountains and forests, inflicting severe environmental damage. However, through the efforts of environmental activists and local volunteers, the fire was eventually brought under control.

It is worth noting that in recent years, following artillery shelling by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other military operations in the border regions of Kurdistan, natural resources and forests have repeatedly suffered heavy damage, and several environmental activists have lost their lives while trying to contain wildfires.
