Israel targeted Iranian weapons caches in Syria, says Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Sunday a weekend airstrike against Iranian targets in Syria, destroying numbers of their weapons caches in Damascus airport, The Time of Israel reported.

Speaking at a weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that “the Israel Defense Forces has attacked hundreds of Iranian and Hezbollah targets. Just in the past 36 hours, the air force attacked Iranian depots full of Iranian weapons in the Damascus International Airport.”

Syrian military reported a series of airstrikes by Israeli warplanes “towards the vicinity of Damascus, “on Friday night.

“We have operated—to impressive success—to block Iran’s military entrenchment in Syria,” Netanyahu added.

Tehran has a fragile relation with is regional rival, Saudi Arabia and Israel as well as the United States especially since US President Donald Trump left Iran nuclear deal on May and re-imposed harsh sanctions against Iran, partly for its interventions in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.  

Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes against Iranian troops in Syria in recent years.
