US President Donald Trump promised Saturday to use what is known as “snapback technique” to unilaterally restore UN sanctions on Tehran.

His declaration came a day after the UN Security Council rejected a US resolution to extend an Iranian arms embargo, which is due to expire in mid-October.

"We'll be doing a snapback," Trump said during a news conference.

"You'll be watching it next week," he added.

The US President referred to a controversial provision of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which argues that the United States remains a “participant” in the 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), despite its stated withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, and consequently can force a return to sanctions, if it sees Iran as being in violation of the deal’s terms.
