Consumption of poisonous beverages killed 6 people and hospitalized 37 more in Iran’s central province of Isfahan, University of Medical Sciences reported on Thursday.
The head of the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Tahereh Changiz told reporters, "a total of 43 people were hospitalized after drinking bootleg alcoholic beverages, while 6 of them died of fatal poisoning."
Tahereh Changiz added that the other 37 users are still hospitalized.
Trading and consuming alcoholic beverages are forbidden and considered as crime since the establishment of Islamic government in 1979. Iranian consumers either opt for smuggled alcoholic beverages or choose to drink domestic home-made drinks.
None-standard and home-made alcoholic drinks caused a lot of poisonings, fatal kidney and liver damages, and even death in Iran. In some cases, poisonous alcohol makes people go blind.
Despite the damages, the import of healthy and standard alcoholic drinks is still prohibited and considered as a crime by the Islamic government.
