Hoshiar Faqihi, Iranian deputy of Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture said on Thursday that the imported frozen red meat will be escorted to the distribution spots to avoid robbery, Iranian state media reported.
“The imported red meat will be escorted to the distribution posts to make sure that it ends up at the hand of the consumer,” Faqihi told Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) news agency.
“Though this (escorting red meat) is not our job, but we will do so to maintain safety in the market, after all we cannot consider this stuff (meat) as ordinary wares,” he added.
Iran has been facing a serious shortage of meat in the last few months as the country is struggling with international sanctions, wild inflation and financial crisis.
According to statistics by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) the annual use of meat among Iranian were sharply decreased, comparing to the rest of the World.
Shahram Mir Akhor from Consumer Protection Organization said that the reason of shortage of meat is a decrease in domestic production of meat.
“The problems occurred as the production of red meat reduced,” Mir Akhor told IRIB News, “The country’s meat market needs 960,000 tons of red meat, while only 280,000 tons of red meat have been produced,” he explained.
Avatoday received several reports that enormous numbers of ships and cows have been exported to Iraq by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as the country’s currency has lost 70 percent of its value since last year and the organization is in despair need of USD.
