"A U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq on July 18, 2026, during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone while conducting operational duties. Another service member was injured and remains under medical treatment for minor wounds."
One day earlier, CENTCOM had announced the first confirmed U.S. combat fatalities in the war with Iran since March, reporting that two American service members were killed and one was reported missing during defensive operations in Jordan, as escalating regional tensions placed the fragile ceasefire under increasing strain.
In its latest statement, the U.S. military added: "Following an extensive search, U.S. military personnel today recovered unidentified human remains at the site in Jordan. The identification process is ongoing."
The statement noted that the remains could belong to the previously reported missing service member.
CENTCOM did not disclose the exact location of the attack in Jordan and said the identities of the casualties would not be released until their families had been notified.
U.S. forces remain deployed in Iraq for training and counterterrorism missions, although their numbers have declined significantly from the approximately 170,000 troops stationed there during the height of the Iraq War.
