Tehran is increasing its enrichment of uranium further, even beyond the already 60% enrichment, which was in a clear violation of the 2015 nuclear deal, the UN nuclear watchdog said on Monday.
The new development has prompted the International Atomic Energy Agency to “increase the frequency and intensity of its safeguards activities” at the above-ground Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant (PFEP) at Natanz, the IAEA said in a report seen by Reuters.
Iran has refined uranium far above the deal's limit of 3.67% and much closer to the 90% suitable for atom bomb cores.
The Islamic Republic has yet to announce a date to resume discussions in Vienna about reviving the 2015 nuclear pact.
Former US President Donald Trump abandoned the pact in 2018 and reimposed harsh U.S. sanctions. About a year later, Iran started violating some of the deal’s limits on uranium enrichment.
