A Kurdish-Iranian asylum seeker who set himself on fire last week in front of the United Nations office in Erbil died of his injuries last night in a hospital, Avatoday reporter who was at the hospital said.

Behzad Mahmoudi suffered from 93% burns, doctors told the reporter.

In a recorded footage released on social media before the incident, Mahmoudi blamed the United Nations representative office for neglecting thousands of refugees living in extremely difficult situation" in Iraqi Kurdistan.

He also said that he escaped Iran due to the suppressions and threats he had faced as a political activist in the country.

The 25-years-old refugee from Bukan, who lived in the Kurdistan Region for four years, set himself on fire in protest of what he named as ill-treatments of asylum seekers by the United Nations' office in the capital city of Iraq Kurdistan, Erbil.

Mahmoudi was reportedly a member of Kurdish opposition party, Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan.

There was no immediate response to the death of the young refugee from UN officials.
