Iranian regime on Friday cried out for “harsh retaliation” after a US airstrike killed two of its most powerful military men yesterday at the Baghdad international airport.

Pentagon confirmed in a statement the operation that led to the killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp’s Quds chief Qassem Suleimani and Abu Mahdi Muhandis, chief of Iraq’s Katayeb Hezbollah controlled by Iran.

US Defence Department said the Iranian general “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.” It has also blamed Suleimani for preparing an attack on US embassy in Baghdad earlier this week.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned a “harsh retaliation is waiting” for the US. He also declared three-days of public mourning for Suleiman’s death.

Khamenei has appointed Deputy Commander of the Quds Force Esmail Ghaani as the organization’s new head.

US has designated the entire Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps including Suleimani’s Quds unit as terrorist group.
