Iran shut down Instagram accounts of some of the country’s female musicians on Thursday in an attempt to implement its strict Islamic laws, which outlaw women’s singing.

The Instagram accounts of Aso Kohzadi and Naghmeh Moradabadi have been blocked and it has been disclosed that they will be prosecuted.

In a similar move, Isfahan’s Revolutionary Prosecutor has filed a case against Negar Moazam, a female solo singer who has been singing in a village in central Iran named Ayandeh. She used her Instagram account to post her music video clips.

Following Telegram, which is messaging app, Instagram is the second most popular social network app among Iranians, mostly young people. It is also one of the several social network apps that is not entirely blocked by Iranian officials, though every now and then there are rumors about government’s decision to block it.

Iranian young people use Instagram to show activities that are mostly banned by the government including dancing, female singing, and music playing.

One of the controversial cases was Maedeh Hojabri the Iranian dancing girl, who used to post her dancing video clips on Instagram. She was arrested in 2018 and her case led to a huge social debate among the Iranians.
