The two-year anniversary of the death of Mahsa Jina Amini in police custody was marked Sunday by a strong military presence and a general strike by tradespeople and shopkeepers in Kurdish cities across numerous provinces of Iran — along with protest rallies in cities worldwide.

Numerous images circulating Sunday on social media also showed a significant number of military and security forces around the Amini family residence in Saqqez in Iran's Kurdish region.

Last week, despite pressure from security authorities, Amjad Amini and Mozhgan Eftekhari, Mahsa's parents, said they intended to hold a ceremony on Sunday at their daughter's gravesite. However, the family were not allowed by Iranian agents to leave their house, sources close to the family told media.

Images circulating on social media Sunday showed Iranians throughout the world participating in a protest gathering on the anniversary of Amini's death. They carried placards in solidarity with the Iranian protest movement and raised their voices in chants advocating for democracy and freedom in Iran.

The 22-years-old Mahsa Jina Amini was a Kurdish woman from Iran whose arrest in Tehran for opposing mandatory hijab and subsequent death in police custody sparked a wave of protests throughout the country. People and governments around the world reacted widely to her death.
