Tehran and Baghdad have reportedly reached an agreement to disarm members of Iranian Kurdish dissident groups based in the Kurdistan Region and relocate their members from their current bases.
Iranian forces have periodically launched strikes targeting members of Iranian Kurdish groups based in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region near the border with Iran.
Iranian officials accuse these groups of being involved in attacks against the Islamic Republic. Iraq's Foreign Ministry has condemned the Iranian attacks on Iraqi territory.
Under the Tehran-Baghdad agreement, “Iraq has committed to disarm armed separatists and terrorist groups present in its territory, close their bases and relocate them to other locations before September 19," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on August 28.
Kanaani said that while relations between the two neighboring countries are “friendly and warm...the presence of terrorists in the northern region of Iraq is an unpleasant stain on mutual ties.”
A spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said in a statement that the agreement with Iran promises that Iraq will deploy border guards to prevent the “infiltration of militants” across the border and will hand over wanted suspects to Tehran “after the issuance of arrest warrants in accordance with the law.”
