Iranian President Hassan Rouhani traveled to Japan to ask for help with the country’s devastating economy due to US sanctions.

Rouhani’s trip to Tokyo, which is the first by an Iranian head of state in two decades, came after deadly protests over fuel price hikes resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries due to brutal government suppression.

Rouhani on Saturday held a closed meeting at a Tokyo hotel with Japanese business owners, hoping to strengthen ties with Japan.

During the meeting, Iranian President criticized US for the international sanctions.

US President Donald Trump withdrew from 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions last year.

During a summit on Friday, Rouhani called on Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the rest the world to help Tehran with its troubled economy.
