On July 17, British police announced that they had charged a 39-year-old man with allegedly cooperating with Iranian intelligence and terrorist-linked entities. The case is the latest in a series of incidents linked to Tehran that are being prosecuted under the UK's National Security Act.

Police identified the suspect as Vahid Abari, a resident of Liverpool in northern England. He has been transferred to a police station in central England, while searches were carried out at properties in Birmingham and Liverpool.

British security officials have repeatedly warned that Iran has attempted to use individuals or criminal groups as proxies to carry out hostile activities inside the United Kingdom.

Since the outbreak of the conflict between the United States and Iran, several antisemitic attacks in the UK have reportedly been linked to the Islamic Republic.

As part of new powers introduced to counter the use of state-backed proxy networks, the United Kingdom earlier this week formally banned support for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Regarding Abari's case, police stated that no direct threat to any individual or group has been identified at this stage.

Last week, the UK also summoned Iran's most senior diplomat in London following the 2024 knife attack on Iranian journalist Pouria Zeraati, after two Romanian nationals were convicted in connection with the assault.
