CNN reported on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, that Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who was arrested on December 12, 2025, in the city of Mashhad, has gone on a hunger strike while in detention.

According to a statement released by the Narges Mohammadi Foundation, based in Paris, and provided to CNN, credible information has been received indicating that Ms. Mohammadi began her hunger strike on Monday, February 2, 2026. The statement says she is protesting “her unlawful detention and the dire conditions under which she is being held—conditions that are a shared reality for many political prisoners currently detained in Iran.”

Ali Rahmani, Narges Mohammadi’s son, said in a statement that he is “deeply concerned” about his mother and all individuals detained by the Islamic Republic.

Rahmani stated: “What is happening in our country constitutes crimes against humanity,” adding that his mother had, prior to her arrest, called for “solidarity, unity, and peace.”

Narges Mohammadi, along with several other human rights activists, was violently arrested by security forces on December 12, 2025, during a memorial ceremony in Mashhad honoring Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer and human rights activist.

In its statement, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation emphasized that, given her medical history—including heart disease, chest pain, high blood pressure, spinal disc problems, and other health conditions—“the continuation of her detention poses a serious risk to her life and constitutes a violation of human rights laws.”
