An Iranian man has been arrested in Sweden for alleged participation of executing thousands of political prisoners back in 1988 in Iran, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

The 58-years-old man was visiting his relatives in Sweden when arrested by the security forces. He has immediately denied the allegations.

The Islamic Republic itself has never confessed to the crime despite the evidences which revealed that such murders had in fact occurred.

“In 2016 a 28-year-old audio tape surfaced in which Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, the deputy Supreme Leader of Iran at the time, said the executions were the ‘biggest crimes committed by the Islamic Republic,” Reuters said.

According to the agency, the man is awaiting a decision by December 11 on whether he should be formally charged and put on trial.

According to the Amnesty International an estimated number of 5000 political activists were executed by the Islamic Republic late 80s.
