Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced that Baghdad has implemented all clauses of a security agreement with Tehran that entails the complete disarmament and re-location of Kurdish-Iranian political parties based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The minister’s remarks were made in an exclusive interview with Alhurra satellite TV channel on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Hussein stated that Iran’s cessation of artillery bombardments on the positions of secessionist groups in the Kurdistan region was among the conditions of the agreement.
Iraq, in return, is obligated to remove armed elements from border areas. The central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have managed to successfully undertake the task, Hussein noted.
Following last year’s popular uprising in Iran, triggered by the death of Kurdish-Iranian woman Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody, Iran accused Kurdish political groups of fueling the protests. Tehran carried out several missile attacks on these political groups inside the Iraqi soil, targeting civilians.
Amini was arrested by police allegedly for violating strict Islamic dress code for women.
