Canadian lawyers filed lawsuit against Iran on behalf of victims abroad the Ukrainian plane shot down by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps last month.
“The lawsuit was filed against Iran, its supreme leader, the elite Revolutionary Guards and others as defendants. It alleges that the downing of the plane was ‘an intentional and deliberate act of terrorism.’,” Ashraq al-Awsat reported on Saturday.
According to the agency, the lawyers are seeking at least $1.1 billion in compensation.
In a separate move last week, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelinsky, has also announced that his country is considering referring Tehran to the International Court of Justice in an attempt to receive “greater” compensation for victims of Iran plane downing.
The Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport on January 8.
Three days later and under international pressure, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani finally admitted an investigation found that “missiles fired due to human error.”
Iran has stated that two missiles were shot, killing all 176 people on board.
The incident occurred in the tense hours as Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps were carrying out “revenge” attacks on American military bases in Iraq in response to the death of the regime’s top commander Qassem Soleimani a week earlier in US strikes in Baghdad.
