US President Donald Trump has criticized French President Emmanuel Macron of sending “mixed signals” to Iran over talks with Washington.

“Iran is in serious financial trouble. They want desperately to talk to the U.S., but are given mixed signals from all of those purporting to represent us, including President Macron of France,” Trump said in a tweet published on August 8.

“I know Emmanuel means well, as do all others, but nobody speaks for the United States but the United States itself,” he wrote.

In May 2018, US president Donald Trump withdrew from Iran’s nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Tensions have been rising between the two countries since then.

Other countries such as Germany, Britain and France have been trying to save the deal with Iran despite the US withdrawal.
