US secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited on Sunday his Swiss counterpart, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, as international concerns are raising about US-Iran tensions in the Middle East.
Switzerland represents US interests in Iran since the two have not any official diplomatic relationship.
Pompeo is visiting four European countries aiming to discuss security issues and the escalations of tensions with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
US president Donald Trump has been expressing his country’s willing to negotiate with Iran in the past few weeks. While Iranian Supreme Leader Seyed Ali Khamenei said any negotiation with Americans would be akin to “poison.”
Meanwhile Pompeo has declined to explain the details of his mission in Switzerland regarding Iran.
“I’m not going to talk about how we’re communicating or not communicating with Iran,” he told the reporters.
