A senior police officer was killed by unidentified individuals in southeastern Iran's Baluchestan on Sunday.

Alireza Shahraki, who headed the police department in Saravan County of the border province, was shot multiple times in his car, reports said.

The police officer's wife, who was critically injured in the attack, also died at a hospital, state media reported.

The armedmen fled the scene after the incident.

Baluchestan province has seen harshest government crackdown in the past few months as a popular uprising calls for regime change throughout the country.

Earlier this week, a senior Iranian cleric and a former representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Baluchestan, Ayatollah Abbasali Soleimani, was killed in an armed attack in northern Mazandaran province. Iranian officials later claimed that the attack was not political.
