A day of mourning for Mahsa Amini, the young Kurdish woman whose death in police custody sparked an uprising in Iran, was ended by violence on Wednesday as security forces attacked and shot at demonstrators in parts of the country, according to media reports, rights groups and videos posted on social media.
Tens of thousands of people in her hometown Saqqez, Kurdistan Province, marched towards Amini's grave as security forced have not allowed them to drive to the site.
Large demonstrations had also spread across the country to many cities and university campuses.
Huge crowds in the streets of most Iranian cities gathered while clapping and chanting slogans such as “Women, Life, Freedom”, “We don’t want the Islamic Republic” and “Don’t call it a protest, it is now a revolution”, according to videos on social media.
Security forces attacked protesters with tear gas, beat them with batons and in some places, like Tehran, Shiraz, Qazvin and Saghez, opened fire on them, with pellets, paint and live bullets, videos showed.
Some crowds fought back, chasing security forces and setting fire to their motorcycles and vehicles.
