In a letter addressed to the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Germany, Moritz Körner has requested the release of Iranian civil rights activist Atena Daemi.

Körner is a German politician and a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament. He also asked Iranian authorities to maintain the medical assistance, which is reportedly denied from Daemi.

"She is the one in need of help now because of the abuse and indignity she has endured in prison. The manner of her arrest and trial, her ill-treatment, and her seven-year prison sentence are in violation of both UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, Iranian law, and the human rights treaties ratified by Iran," Körner said in the letter.

He said the world recognizes Daemi as an activist who protects children.

Daemi, a civil rights activist who has been serving a 5-year prison term in Tehran's notorious Evin prison, was faced with a second charge, which ultimately sentenced her to a further 3 years and 7 months in prison.

Daemi was arrested in October 2014. EU Parliament member calls for release of Iranian civil activist
