An Iranian court in Tehran sentenced a dual Iranian-American businessman to 10 years in jail for spying, NBC news reported.

NBC news said Emad Shargi was first summoned to court on Nov. 30 and told he had been convicted. The agency quoted an unidentified family friend.

Shargi reportedly was arrested while trying to leave the country on Dec 6 after being released on bail on charges of spying and “gathering military intelligence,” Iran’s state-run Young Journalists’ Club reported last week.

The arrest comes as tensions between the two countries have been rising more than ever.

Joe Biden prepares to take office in the US and seeks to end a standoff with Iran by reviving the 2015 nuclear deal.

However, Iran has been showing zero interest in dealing with the US. Tehran breached its last major commitment under the deal last week after it announced a rapid increase in the level of enriched uranium.
