A leader of an Iranian opposition group was abducted in Turkey and handed over to Iran’s government on Friday, the group announced in a statement.

Habib Chaab, also known as Habib Asyud, is the vice-president of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Al Ahwaz, an armed opposition group located in Iran’s southern city of Ahvaz.

“We hold the state of Iran fully responsible for the life of Mr. Habib Asyud, and call upon the authorities of Sweden and Turkey, to further investigate the details of his abduction,” the statement said.

The group is seeking to create an independent in the Arab-populated region of Ahvaz.

“The abduction occurred with the collaboration of a certain Gulf country and Ahwazi figures,” the statement added without further elaboration.

This is not the first time Iran has abducted opposition activists from abroad including activists and journalists from minority groups.
