The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Tuesday it carries out airstrikes on facilities used by pro-Iran militia groups in eastern Syria.

“At President Biden’s direction, U.S. military forces conducted precision airstrikes in Deir ez-Zor Syria,” the statement says, “these precision strikes are intended to defend and protect U.S. forces from attacks like the ones on August 15 against U.S. personnel by Iran-backed groups.”

According to the statement, the strike targeted facilities of the militia groups aligned with Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

It added that the US does not seek conflict, “but will continue to take necessary measures to protect and defend” American people.

CENTCOM said that “US forces remain in Syria to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.”

IRGC-backed militia groups have been fighting in Syria since 2011.

The strike on these militias came after a drone attack targeted a US military base in Syria’s al-Tanaf border point between Syria, Jordan and Iraq.
